So you’re a starter and you’ve decided you want to get your first plant and embark on the journey to being a seasoned plant parent? either that or you’ve been randomly gifted a plant and you don’t know what to do. Assuming you’ve been given a plant as a gift the only piece of advice I can give is to research and learn as much as you can about it and see if yo u are able to provide a suitable environment for it to flourish.

If you have made the decision to take on a plant (or twenty) because you want something to care for and liven up your home or you work from home office space and you don’t know where to start then I can recommend a few easy care plants that can get you started without too much fuss, plants that can live happily in a regular home environment without too much specialist care.

Best common starter plants

If you look online you will find many sites will give you a list of a few plants that are “easy care” or “unkillable” so in the plant community these starter/beginner plants are known as just that. If you want one plant to add some life and colour to an area of your home then it’s pretty simple to choose one that’s little hassle and looks pretty if you think you want to eventually have a few plants I would suggest focusing on plants you actually want and then learn their care.

ZZ Plant  (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

The ZZ plant is often recommended because they thrive on neglect. It seems like the more you ignore them the better they fare, they do really well in low light conditions and aren’t too bothered by their soil going dry for a while. These are a very unusual one to look at and I think that may be why they are so popular. They aren’t particularly fast growing but they are very pretty.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria)

Sometimes referred to as Mother in laws tongue this plant is an old school favourite, you’ve likely seen them around even in older relatives homes. These plants come in a variety of sub-species and are very striking to look at. Once again a very low maintenance plant that doesn’t need tons of light and can go long periods without water.

Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum)

Spider plants are another one that are a really common starter plant and you’ll see them around all over the place, I don’t personally think they are much to look at but you like what you like. As a starter you may want something that can stand or hang in your home to get whatever effect you want. These plants are lower on the maintenance scale and should thrive in your home with the right care.

Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

This is a great one in my opinion for a started=r in their plant journey. I love Pothos and I have a variety of them in my home. These plants are great to have and some of them are very fast growing so it can be very rewarding to see them thriving and producing new baby leaves to let you know they are loving life and that you’re doing a good job. They are beautiful vine plants that you can have hanging or climbing and there are so many beautiful variations to choose from. Again simple conditions like the rest and they are good to go.

Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera Deliciosa)

This has to be one of my favourites on the list. It was my dream plant when I first was starter plant parent and I listened to all the blogs and didn’t get one because it wasn’t on the easy care starter lists I saw. However I think it is one of the easiest plants there is. They are so hardy and resilient and all they want to do is grow for you. They like the light and they like an airy well draining soil but other than that they are super easy going and just beautiful and as they mature they will give you the most beautiful fenustrated leaves.

The Monstera is another really rewarding plant to keep as it will give you beautiful new growth often and its a joy to watch the gorgeous large leaves unfurl.

Whatever plant you choose to be your first baby, just make sure you learn as much about it as possible, once you know what they like and how often they like it care for any plant will be easy. So if you are looking for a first starter plant or just adding a new plant to your already blooming collection, make the right choice for you and your home.
