3 Tips For Staying Warm This Winter

Energy bills are at the forefront of our minds for many of us, especially as the year progresses and we start to move onto the cooler weather. The truth is that the cost of heating is on the rise and so when it comes to staying warm this winter we need to take a sensible approach.

Heating

Of course, there are going to be times (and plenty of them) when you need to use your radiators and heat your home. This is unavoidable, but we can be sensible about it. For example, if you have rooms in your home that are empty then switching off the heating in these rooms is a good idea.

If you’re out for the day then leaving the heating on might mean you come back to a cosy home but it will also mean you’re going to land yourself with a hefty bill in the process. If you are able to then investing in a HIVE type system when you can control the heating from your phone can be beneficial because you can easily turn on and off radiators throughout your home.

Preparing Now

Although the weather might seem nice now and winter a view in the distance, now is the time to look at your home and what changes you might need to make to be more energy efficient. For example, do your windows and doors let in a draft? If so, look at how these can be repaired or whether investing in draft excluders is a good idea.

Being Cosy

Being cosy at home is a must and looking at ways to do this is sensible – rugs on wooden floors can make a big difference and even having more than one duvet on the bed can help. Blankets not only make for a cosy evening in front of the sofa, but also allow you to stay warm without needing to put the heating on too often.

Bonus Tip – Going The Extra Mile

There are definitely things you can do to help keep the general temperature of the house up – closing internal doors for example. If you have cooked a meal then opening the oven door after this and allow the heat from your cooker escape into the kitchen can really help too. The same goes for warm bath water being left in the bath to let the heat make its way to the upstairs rooms. Hot soup for lunch is really warming and helps you feel much warmer from the inside.
